I have worked in publicity and marketing since 2008, at Bloomsbury Publishing, Running Press, and Quirk Books. I have an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts (2012). I’m also a gradate of the Columbia Publishing Course (2008).
My experience lies mostly in marketing picture books, middle grade, and YA, though I have worked on some humor books as well. As a Publicist at Running Press, I had the opportunity to focus on growing the reach of their Kids and YA group. I was a voice in the acquisitions process and designed unique marketing campaigns for each title. I submitted to state awards lists and pitched books to press influencers and book bloggers.
My favorite aspect of that job was the planning process, where I developed tailored marketing campaigns for books and worked with authors to collaboratively refine them. I loved brainstorming slogans, writing press releases, refining messaging, and coaching authors on their online presence and approach to social media.
The prospect of promoting your own work can be overwhelming, especially for a writer who has no training in marketing or the industry. There’s the temptation to completely hide or to go to the other extreme and try everything, which can run you ragged and take the joy out of your launch.
With this business, I’m offering direction on how best channel your efforts. Let’s make your launch fun AND visible.
